Villages in our world spawn randomly and contain life!

When you discover a village, it is standard etiquette that you name the village using a marker sign, and try to protect the villagers from harm. If you remain in the area at night, the villagers will be attacked and killed by local monsters. You'll either need to exit the area (outside of the view distance) from the village or build a wall to protect the village and light it up brightly to prevent monsters from spawning and getting in.
